  A full-blown equine haven, Yorktown Stables encourages horsemanship through an armada of lessons and activities, including guided trail rides available by appointment. The stable matches human riders to their horse counterparts through use of a compatibility matrix that factors in such characteristics as riding experience and preference for chestnuts versus blonds. Once installed on their steeds, riders take to the ring for a 15-minute introduction that knuckles down on riding basics. Guides then escort groups of about four riders onto exclusive trails that meander through more than 100 acres along the scenic Poquoson River.

• All riders are required to sign a waiver before riding.
• Reservations for all trail rides may be taken up to two weeks in advance.
• An adult must be present at all times during the equestrian activity.
• Riders must be at least 6 years of age.
• Riders must weigh less than 300 lbs. to ride. Riders will be required to weigh in at check in.
• Riders who do not show up for a scheduled ride will be subject to a $10 riding fee per reserved horse.
• All riders must report to the stables 30 minutes prior to scheduled ride.
• Helmets are required for all persons on trail rides.
• Boots are required for experienced rides.
• All rides will be cancelled due to rain, inclement weather, or unsafe riding conditions. (Our trails can become very slippery and dangerous especially going up and down the hills, with even slight rain. We do apologize for any inconvenience.)
• For your safety, all riders are required to wear protective footwear such as sneakers or boots only. Any other footwear will be subject to inspection and improper footwear will result in the cancellation of the scheduled equestrian activity.

Maximum weight limit for riders is 300 pounds.

About the Children and safety- we want children to have an enjoyable experience. Even though the minimum age is 6 years old, every rider must be able to demonstrate the ability to safely control their horse and follow instruction. If a child does not follow instruction or the guides are concerned for safety, the child will be returned to the stable and there will be no refund or exception.   Children under 14 years old must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Western/English tack is used.  

What about the horses? We do not knowingly keep any horse that we feel could cause a riding problem. Under the correct conditions all horses can be dangerous. All horses are properly vaccinated, vetted and cared for. We do not tolerate any abuse to our horses.  

Who are our guides? Guides are carefully selected, screened, and trained professionals. They are accomplished equestrians with special talents to assist riders of any level to have a great riding experience. If you enjoy your ride, feel free to tip your guides.

Release and Liability- it is mandatory that all riders understand and sign a complete liability release. Per the code of Virginia 3.1-796.132 and 3.1-796.133, Horse professionals are exempt from suit and riders ride at their own risk. Copies of the code are available in the stable office.
