Riding Lesson FAQ
What kinds of things do I learn in lessons?
Lessons are adapted to fit the age and experience of the individual rider and geared towards their individual goals. In all cases safety is emphasized.
Riders are expected to know all aspects of horse care, at our barn you won't get to 'just ride'. You will learn to lead, groom, tack up, cool out your horse, clean your tack and care for your horse in a safe manner.
Is there an age limit on riding lessons?
Absolutely not, there is no such thing as being too old to ride! Please note however that there is a weight limit
How should I pay you?
Please pay BEFORE class by dropping a check (made out to Kristen Paster) or cash in the box in the tack room
Do you 'rent' horses for riding?
No, horses are only available to be ridden in lessons with the instructor present.
Can I work off my lesson?
At this time I have a full time employee and working student so this is not an option.
How far in advance can I book for my first lesson?
I typically will book no further than 2 weeks in advance when spots are open. However, at times I have a waiting list to start lessons in which case I will take students in order of the list as available. Please contact me to book or to get on the waiting list.
What do I need to wear/bring to riding class?
Riders are highly encouraged to wear breeches (these can be purchased for as low as $25 at many tack shops or online), but pants must be worn- shorts are not allowed. A full length shirt, boots with a 1/2" heal (no tennis shoes, high-heels or hiking boots with large tread). It is always encouraged to bring a drink such as water or Gatorade in the summer to stay hydrated or hot chocolate in the winter to stay warm. Riders are also highly encouraged to have their own riding helmet fitted (no bicycle helmets are allowed), however several helmets will be available to borrow.
Can I trailer my horse to you for lessons?
Yes, you can truck-in for lessons at our facility or at the local horse show grounds at Newport News Park.
I have my own horse, and am interested in private lessons at my home location, is this possible?
Yes! Kristen and Sarah are now covering several cities surrounding Yorktown and providing riding lessons at customer’s home locations, as well as boarding facilities, provided your boarding facility allows outside trainer access. Please inquire with your boarding facility for their specific rules and regulations.
I had a riding accident and I am very nervous, can you meet my needs?
Yes, we can. Our horses are all very experienced and quiet, safe in traffic and easy to handle. Therefore, we can meet everybody's requirements. You also have the option of regaining your confidence in one of our tailor-made lessons.
I want to give a present of riding lessons to my Niece? How does it work?
We issue vouchers for any given amount of sessions. The sessions can be used up as lessons. The recipient can make the appointment for their riding whenever it suits him/her.
Do you offer pony rides for birthday parties?
Yes, depending on our riding lesson program schedule we can accommodate a small group of children for birthday party pony rides. A two hour session includes two assistants and one pony for grooming and lead-line rides. $225 minimum.
